Foreplay is Overrated

According to the Telegraph:

Foreplay may be overrated according to a survey based on 2,300 women, which found that it has little or no significance when it comes to the likelihood of having an orgasm.

This is an interesting example of the conflict between evolutionary psychology and social convention. From the evolutionary standpoint, the genetic advantage is to complete the sexual act as fast as possible to reduce the risk of attack by a predator or jealous competitor. Males can orgasm within 50 thrusts. Females need longer, but not anywhere near as long as the social convention would claim.

This study is also further support for the Alpha Male component of the evolutionary psych theory. “Bad Boys” are known to be “selfish” about sex in the sense that they are focused on the actual penetration component. They don’t spend a lot of time trying to woo a woman through foreplay. Yet, Bad Boys are also more sought out as sexual partners and thought to be better lovers. This is despite the fact that women talk about the desire for foreplay. Evolutionary Psych would call this a “compliance test”. If the male suitor complies with the female demand for foreplay, he is indicating submissive behavior, and declaring his beta status. He hopes to woo her by emphasising his long term benefits to provide for offspring. He emphasises the nurture side of the nature vs nurture debate. An Alpha male would disregard the foreplay demand and go directly for the intercourse.
